Since the 2003-2004 school year, Mr. Barks has been the General Music Teacher at Greene Elementary School in Richmond, Va.
He has also, from 2003-2005, served as General Music Teacher for Maymont Elementary School in Richmond, VA. Prior to coming
to Richmond, Mr. Barks has served as a music educator for the following school systems: Southampton County, Buckingham County,
Virginia Beach City, and Tyrrell County (NC).
Since January of 2005, Mr. Barks has served as the Music Director and Conductor of the Chesterfield Community Band. He also
serves as Music Director and Conductor of the Emmanuel Barks Brass Ensemble, a post he has held since February of 1993. Mr.
Barks has also served as Assistant Conductor for the former Norfolk State University Orchestral Consortium (1991-1996) and
as Choir Director for St. Anne's Catholic Church (1998-1999) in Edenton, NC. In February of 2007, Mr. Barks made his conducting
debut with the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra.
Mr. Barks, who is also a composer, has had his compositions performed by both the Buckingham Brass and the Petersburg Symphony.
Using movement as a teaching modality, Mr. Barks has utilized his often "uncompromising" compositions as teaching resources
with elementary aged children. However, Mr. Barks intends for these compositions to be for all audiences.
As a trombonist, Mr. Barks is a member of both the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the Immanuel Baptist Church Orchestra (Colonial
Heights, VA) and the Buckingham Brass (who have played at Mr. Barks' own church, the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond,
VA). He also occassionally plays with the Henrico Community Band.
His professional affiliations are as follows: Music Educator's National Conference, Virginia Music Educator's Association,
Virginia Elementary Music Educator's Association (in which he serves as a District Representaive), Richmond Elementary Music
Teacher's Association (in which he serves as President), and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (a Professional Music Fraternity).
Mr. Barks holds the following degrees: B.M. in Instrumental Music Education (Virginia Commonwealth University) and M.M. in
Music Composition and Music Theory (Norfolk State University).
